Essential cultural insights to travel respectfully, comfortably, and confidently through sacred temples and royal palaces.
Warmth and Hospitality in the Land of Kings
Rajasthanis are famous worldwide for their heartfelt hospitality summarized by the motto: Padharo Mhare Des (Welcome to my land). To ensure respectful and delightful interactions throughout your journey, here are practical etiquette guidelines:
Temple Dress Codes & Rituals
- Footwear: Always remove your shoes, sandals, and socks before entering Hindu temples, Jain shrines, or mosques. Most shrines have a free shoe-keeping counter (a ₹20 tip to the keeper is customary).
- Modesty: Cover your shoulders and knees. Carrying a light linen scarf or dupatta is very handy for wrapping around shoulders or covering hair.
- Leather Restrictions: In orthodox Jain temples (like Ranakpur and Dilwara) and Pushkar Brahma Temple, all leather items (belts, wallets, watchstraps) must be left outside.
- Photography: Photography is often prohibited inside temple inner sanctums. Always look for signage or ask your chauffeur before taking photos.
